I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. 1326J. of the 22nd instant, forwarding a copy of a letter from the Government of India in the Home Department pointing out that the report submitted with this office letter No. 863, dated 14th February last, is a report on the working, not of section 31, but of section 32 of Act IX of 1874.
2. In reply, I beg to report, for the information of His Honour the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, that no single instance can be traced from the records of this office of the deportation, at the cost of the importers, of any In the cases of European other than a groom under section 32 of the Act. British seamen becoming destitute within six months of their leaving their last ship, they have been removed from the country in communication with the Shipping Master, while destitute foreign seamen are provided with ships by their Consuls.
3. I beg to express my regret for the mistake in submitting a report on the working of section 32 instead of section 31 of the Act.
